Further Information for Applicants
The fund is registered as a charity and any grants made have to fulfil the conditions agreed with the Charity Commissioners. The trustees are the members of the Executive Council of BAHSHE. Three of these administer the fund.
OBJECTS:"The trustees shall apply the clear income and, at their discretion, the whole part of the endowments of the Charity in assisting students to keep up with their course of study, training or research, when this is seriously impeded by the effects of illness, disease, injury or physical infirmity". "Students" are defined as persons who are wholly or mainly engaged in a course of study, training or research at a University or other recognised institution of Higher Education in the UK (aged 18+).
RESTRICTIONS:The fund cannot award grants for the payment of fees or general living expenses; and money given will be allocated for a specific purpose, related to disability in an educational setting (one grant per person - current maximum £500). Applicants should be doing a degree level or postgraduate course.
EXAMPLES OF AWARDS:Students can apply for assistance in purchasing educational aids made necessary by their disability, e.g. special computer equipment, extra travel costs for those with mobility problems, cost of note-takers or signers and other special equipment. Priority will be given to those who are not eligible for funding from LEAs such as Disabled Students Allowance; although the Fund is primarily for full-time students, those whose disability makes full time study impossible will be eligible for consideration. Unfortunately, because of the demands made on our Fund, we cannot award to all eligible applicants.
SUBMISSION OF APPLICATIONS:Applications should be made on the approved form obtained from the Agent. This should be sent together with a letter of support from a tutor or member of the academic staff or a disability adviser and a doctor's letter confirming illness or disability. (Dyslexia reports are acceptable when appropriate.) Initial enquiries from ineligible applicants will only receive a reply if a stamped addressed envelope is enclosed.
Applications will be considered by the Trustees three times a year with closing dates on the
FIRST DAY OF NOVEMBER, MARCH AND JUNE. Applications which arrive late for the deadline are unlikely to be considered until the next deadline. Applicants will be informed of the outcome as soon as possible, usually about a month after the closing date.
